Philips Hue: The Light Bulb You Can Control With Your Phone

It might not be the best day to announce a new light bulb, but at least Philips’ hue isn’t just any old light bulb.

It is a light bulb that you can control with your iPhone, iPad, or Android phone. Yes, with an app, you can not only turn on and off the light when you are away from home, but you can also customize the color of the light.

How does it all work? The starter kit, which starts at $199, comes with a smart bridge, a gadget that plugs into your home’s WiFi router. That bridge connects to the LED bulb and then the 600 lumen LED bulb connects to the hue app on your phone. The bulbs screw into your existing fittings, just like any normal light bulb.

Beatiful LED focus lighting from Stephen Clark Government Center

Stephen Clark Government Center Lobby - Miami
Commissioned by: Miami-Dade Art in Public Places
Lighting Consultant and Programming Support: Focus Lighting

The colorful lights of the installation also engage those beyond the lobby—as some columns face the public plaza—and the installation remains functioning even when there are no active participants, as the light panels retain the “memory” of users’ interactivity.

An Interactive Cloud Made of 6,000 Light Bulbs Look Great

“CLOUD” is a large-scale interactive sculpture created from 6,000 light bulbs, new and burnt-out. Constructed by Calgary-based artist Caitlind r.c. Brown and collaborator Wayne Garrett, CLOUD was on public display for one-night-only during Calgary’s first Nuit Blanche Festival

The piece is made from 1,000 working lightbulbs on pullchains and an additional 5,000 made from donated burnt out lights donated by the public.

The idea was to create an informal collaboration between the community and the artists, reduce costs, and experiment with the potential of items post-use.
The steel substructure of the sculpture was covered in a skin of incandescent light bulbs (new and burnt out), and rear-lit from within by 250 compact fluorescent bulbs, pulling a total power of approximately 20 amps (the equivalent of two household outlets).
